Every successful business has a marketing department. A team of professionals who plan campaigns, coordinate product launches, maintain a consistent brand voice, and make sure the world knows about the latest exciting developments.
Unstable Cotton has something even better.
Me, a computer, and a rapidly deteriorating relationship with my to-do list.
I recently fired my social media specialist. This sounds like a bold management decision until you learn that my social media specialist was a paid AI agent with the ability to publish posts. I replaced it with a free AI that writes the posts, which I then copy and paste myself.
We call this vertical integration.
I call it saving money until the business makes enough money to justify spending money, which is a wonderfully circular arrangement when the business isn't making any money yet.
Two New Shirts Enter the Arena
While the marketing department undergoes its restructuring, the design department continues to produce questionable ideas at an alarming rate.
Our latest arrivals demonstrate the two primary forces driving Unstable Cotton: a complete disregard for conventional wisdom and an inability to leave a perfectly good joke alone.

First up: What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Weaker.
You know the old motivational saying. It's supposed to inspire resilience, perseverance, and the indomitable human spirit.
We decided it needed more 16-bit graphics and considerably less encouragement.
Picture a classic arcade fighting game. Two opponents square off. Health bars drain. Pixels fly. And somewhere in the middle of the action is a fundamental truth that motivational speakers would prefer you ignore: sometimes, the experience doesn't make you stronger. Sometimes, it just leaves you tired, sore, and looking for the nearest save point.
It's the perfect shirt for anyone who has ever survived a difficult experience and thought, "Well, I'm definitely not doing that again."

Then there's the Squirrely one.
This one deserves a special acknowledgment because the idea came from my wife, who apparently has her own supply of questionable concepts and is willing to contribute them to the cause.
I'm not saying this establishes a dangerous precedent. I'm merely saying that if the next collection features increasingly unhinged wildlife, you know where to direct your questions.
At Unstable Cotton, we believe good shirt ideas can come from anywhere. A movie reference. A song lyric. A terrible pun. A conversation that should probably have ended five minutes earlier. Or, in this case, my wife.
The creative process is mysterious. The results are wearable.
The Algorithm Is Not Going to Feed Itself
Of course, designing shirts is only half the job. The other half involves convincing people that these shirts exist.
This requires social media posts, product descriptions, blog entries, and the occasional attempt to understand what Instagram wants from us this week. There are platforms to manage, links to check, and algorithms that seem to operate according to rules written by a committee of caffeinated squirrels.
Which brings us back to my staffing decision.
The paid AI agent could publish posts. The free AI can write them. I provide the human judgment, questionable humor, and opposable thumbs required to move text from one window to another.
Is this efficient? Debatable.
Is it a business model? Technically.
Will it scale? Let's not get ahead of ourselves.
For now, we're doing what small businesses have always done: figuring things out as we go, trying new things, and occasionally pretending that a last-minute decision was part of the plan all along.
The Unstable Cotton Philosophy
Here's the thing about running a little T-shirt business: you don't need to change the world. You just need to make something that makes somebody smile, laugh, groan, or point at another person and say, "That's you."
Especially the last one. That's practically a sale.
We're here for the deep cuts, the oddball references, the jokes that take a second to land, and the designs that make you wonder who thought of that in the first place.
Sometimes it's me. Sometimes it's my wife. Sometimes it's the AI.
We're still working out the chain of command.
In the meantime, take a look around Unstable Cotton. There are shirts for music lovers, movie nerds, art enthusiasts, cat people, and anyone who has ever thought that an ordinary T-shirt could use a little more nonsense.
And if you see something you like, consider picking one up. It helps keep the lights on, the ideas flowing, and the marketing department gainfully employed.
Which, as of this writing, is still me.
Unfortunately.
